Altrincham Choral Society

Altrincham Choral Society is a mixed choir of around 100 members.  It has an enviable reputation in North West music circles and now has its concert home in the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where it has a large following.  Founded in 1945 with leanings towards operetta rather than oratorio, its reputation was established under the direction of Kenneth Long, who took over in 1966.  This reputation has been further enhanced by the appointment of Steven Roberts in 1994.

ACS sings a broad repertoire, largely from the mainstream of choral music.  In 2001, however, it broke completely new ground by joining the Hallι Orchestra for two concerts in which ACS performed arrangements of “Symphonic Queen”, and also formed the backing for “The Orchestra”, the reinvented Electric Light Orchestra.

In recent years ACS has made three successful tours of Normandy and Brittany and in July 2005 will give concerts in Venice.

Steven Roberts – Director

Steven has been Musical Director of Altrincham Choral Society since 1994.  He combines a career in education with his work as a conductor and adjudicator in the UK, as well being in demand in Europe as a guest conductor and choir trainer. Steven is also Musical Director of Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir and his commitments stretch in to the year 2008.

Lydia Bryan – Accompanist

Lydia, who accompanies Altrincham Choral Society so superbly each week at rehearsals and also in concerts where necessary, is a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, where she studied piano, harpsichord, violin and singing.  Lydia teaches at Manchester Grammar School and Loreto Grammar School in Altrincham and has been accompanist to Altrincham Choral Society since December 1996.
